Dr Leonard Shan

Dr Leonard Shan is a vascular surgeon at St. Vincent’s and Epworth Hospitals, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery at The University of Melbourne, and Head of Research in the Department of Vascular Surgery at St. Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne. ​He is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and member of the Australian and New Zealand Society for Vascular Surgery.

Leonard is internationally recognised for his expertise on quality of life after surgery. He has authored 35 publications (h-index 16) in some of the highest-ranking journals in medicine and surgery, including Circulation and Annals of Surgery. Leonard’s work has been cited by over 1000 peer-reviewed journal articles. He continues to advance the field of vascular surgery as an editorial board member of the Annals of Vascular Surgery.

Leonard obtained his PhD on quality of life in lower extremity arterial disease from The University of Melbourne with the mentorship of world-renowned surgeons Professor Alun Davies and Professor Peter Choong. This has improved our understanding of outcomes that patients value the most, thus allowing more tailored treatments.

Leonard takes pride in providing high-quality and accessible care to both private and public patients. At St. Vincent’s Hospital, Leonard helped to develop the dedicated varicose veins service which significantly decreases waiting times. Leonard also embraces multidisciplinary care for his patients. He is an integral member of the high-risk foot service at St. Vincent’s Hospital for the comprehensive treatment and prevention of foot wounds and ulcers.

With a compassionate approach to managing complex problems, Leonard works together with his patients to find the best solution.
