Dr Leonard Shan

Dr Leonard Shan’s bio: Dr Leonard Shan, FRACS, PhD Melb is a distinguished vascular surgeon at St. Vincent’s and Epworth Hospitals, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery at The University of Melbourne, Head of Research in the Department of Vascular Surgery at St. Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, and editorial board member of the Annals of Vascular Surgery. He maintains fellowships from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Australian and New Zealand Society for Vascular Surgery. Dr Shan is also the founder of the ShanVascular Veins Centre which provides outpatient-based treatment of chronic venous insufficiency and varicose veins in dedicated operating theatres.

Dr Shan is internationally recognised for his expertise in quality of life after surgery which has been his area of interest for over a decade. He was awarded a Commonwealth Government-funded PhD in vascular surgery from The University of Melbourne with the mentorship of world-renowned surgeons Professor Alun Davies and Professor Peter Choong. His thesis has significantly advanced our understanding of how to achieve outcomes that matter most to patients. To date, Dr Shan has published 35 peer-reviewed journal articles (h-index 16, >1200 citations) in some of the highest-ranking journals in medicine and surgery, including Circulation and Annals of Surgery.

Dr Shan manages a wide variety of arterial and venous conditions in a multidisciplinary environment. He takes pride in supporting his patients throughout their entire treatment journey. Patients are cared for at academic centres of excellence, supported by a highly qualified team of physicians, anaesthetists, intensivists, and allied health staff. Dr Shan provides 6 convenient consulting locations throughout Melbourne, the Macedon Ranges, and Gippsland. On-site or nearby vascular laboratory ultrasounds performed by specialist-trained vascular sonographers are organised for all patients.
